Resist dyeing is a traditional method of dyeing patterns into fabrics by preventing dyes from staining the entire cloth. Rubber bands are what I use to create patterns and hold the garment I’m dying in the shape I want. I like to mix thin and thick rubber bands, as it adds some depth to the resulting pattern — there’s no rhyme or reason in choosing thick or thin, I just mix them up. Or, to create a spiral pattern, I’ll mold the garment into a shape that looks like a cinnamon roll and then put rubber bands around it to hold it together. No matter the shape or pattern, the fabric covered by rubber bands will be white or lighter-colored in the end. FaveCraftsTieDye I love the tie dyed tee pee!

If you have a garden, it’s a good idea to tie dye outside on some plastic sheeting or an old towel incase the kids get a bit carried away.

You can choose the thickness of the folds. 1″ folds all the way up, then folded the folded shirt in quarters in order to make a tighter hold for the rubber bands. To spread the dye more thoroughly, after it sets for a little bit, you can gently squeeze the tightly rubber-banded shirt and give it the “bleeding” you likes. We were using a couple of colors, Red and Blue because I wanted some purple effects which we got nicely. If your folds are thin enough, the colors will come together. If you folded thickly, then some squeezing and/or a deeper dye dip might be needed for the color to reach each other.
